Dr Thomas developed an interest in aviation medicine after a consultation with a pilot suffering decompression sickness and long-term bone damage after an ascent in a decompression chamber used to simulate explosive decompression at a height of 40,000 feet.
Dr Thomas gained his Private Pilot's license in 1998 after his interest in flying was ignited by a taster lesson at Blackbushe airport in Hampshire. At the same time Dr Thomas attended several courses covering various aspects of aviation medicine, putting this into practical use as a locum medical officer at the CAA. He now has a weekly clinic at British Airways where he examines Commercial Pilots.
